Deciding to start therapy can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, you can take it one step at a time. Here is some of what you can expect.
When we first talk, I will be interested to hear about why you are considering therapy. If you want, I can answer any questions you have about me, about payment, and about how we might work together. If you feel I might be a good match for you, we will set up a time to meet. I will ask you to fill out some forms before our first session.
The First Appointment
In our first meeting, we can discuss what’s going on for you and how I can help. I can also explain a bit more about office policies and confidentiality. At the end, we will put together a plan for working on your concerns. When working with children, I like to meet with the parent(s) or guardian(s) alone first to get background information.
Early on, we will set goals for our work together. Once I have gotten to know you, your abilities and resources, and what you have done to deal with this problem to-date, we will develop a plan to meet your goals. As we work on this plan, you may find at times that difficult feelings and thoughts arise. While painful, these thoughts and feelings often hold the key to unlocking your problems. I will encourage you to be as honest with me as you can. In turn, you will have my complete attention, understanding, and support.
Having clear goals will help us know when it is time to finish meeting. Whenever you are thinking that you might be ready to stop coming, we can discuss how to wrap up in a way that will help you hold onto the progress you have made. And, of course, as new situations arise, you are always welcome to come back.
